KZNT 1460AM/101.1FM The Answer

KZNT is a Conservative News-Talk radio station owned by Salem Media Group broadcasting in Colorado Springs/Manitou Springs, Colorado.  It’s nationally syndicated talk shows include:  Hugh Hewitt, Mike Gallagher, Charlie Kirk, Dennis Prager, America First with Sebastian Gorka, The Officer Tatum Show, SEKULOW, Townhall Review, and Best of Salem including Eric Metaxas.  Locally produced programs include:  Retire Financially Fit with Barbara Swiatek, True North, Frontier Freedom Hour, The Restaurant Show with Mike Boyle, Southern Colorado Business Forum, Men with a Purpose, and soon The Peak with Chaim Goldman.

News-Talk programming is the second most popular radio format in the country, based both on listenership and number of radio stations.  Research has shown that the News-Talk format is highly complementary to Salem Media’s core format of Christian Teaching and Talk. As programmed by Salem, both formats express Conservative views and family values.  Salem’s News-Talk format also provides the opportunity to leverage syndicated talk programming produced by Salem Radio Network (SRN).  Their nationally syndicated programs are distributed through approximately 2700 affiliates.

History

1460 AM in Colorado Springs signed on December 21, 1956, as KAFA.  The call letters changed to KYSN (“Kissin”) on July 1, 1958, when the station was acquired by the General Broadcasting Corporation.

Despite having (at the time) a restrictive directional signal and never more than 1,000 watts of power, the station dominated radio listening in the Pikes Peak region into the mid-1970s as the market’s AM Top 40 station.  In 1983, the station switched to an oldies format and changed its calls to KKHT.

In 1985, 1460 flipped to a simulcast of its country music sister station KKCS-FM and adopted the same call letters for the AM band.  At times, KKCS deviated from the simulcast, adopting a classic country format, and later a News-Talk format.

In 2003, Salem Communications purchased AM 1460, continuing the News-Talk format with the new call letters KZNT.  On January 5, 2015, KZNT rebranded as “1460 The Answer“.

KZNT AM 1460 now broadcasts at 5kW during daylight hours reaching from South Denver to south of Pueblo (approx. 1.9 – 2 million residents and 20+ million yearly visitors), and .54kW at night covering the Colorado Springs metro area (approx. .6 million residents), and also operates two FM translators on the 101.1 frequency which simulcast the same programming as the AM.
